Environmental Claims & Substantiation

1. Why This Page Exists

Environmental marketing claims in the United States are governed by Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act (15 U.S.C. § 45), which requires a reasonable basis for every objective claim before it is made, and by the FTC's Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims, the "Green Guides" (16 CFR Part 260). The Green Guides tell marketers to avoid unqualified general claims such as "eco-friendly" or "green," to say "recyclable" only where recycling is actually available, to state recycled content by weight, and to keep every qualification clear, prominent, and next to the claim it limits.

We support those standards. This page connects each environmental statement in our marketing to the evidence it rests on, so that you, a regulator, or a competitor can check our work.

2. Aluminum Recyclability

Claim: Interlock® roofing panels are recyclable.

Basis: The panels are formed from aluminum sheet. Aluminum is recovered through established scrap-metal recycling streams across the United States and can be recycled repeatedly without loss of material quality. At the end of the roof's service life the panels can be sold or delivered to a scrap-metal recycler as commodity aluminum.

Qualification: Roofing panels are not accepted in most household curbside programs; they go to scrap-metal yards and construction-waste recyclers. Check with local facilities for what is accepted in your area (16 CFR § 260.12). When we remove an Interlock roof, or when a contractor we refer you to does, the removed aluminum is taken to a metal recycler rather than a landfill.

3. Recycled Content

Claim: Interlock® panels are manufactured using aluminum that contains recycled content.

Basis: The manufacturer, Interlock Roofing Ltd., reports that its aluminum coil stock incorporates recycled content consistent with the North American aluminum sheet supply, and holds the supplier mill documentation for the coil in production. Any percentage we quote is the manufacturer-reported figure, by weight, current at the time of publication; it can change from lot to lot, and we do not present it as a guaranteed minimum (16 CFR § 260.13). We do not claim the panels are made from 100% recycled aluminum.

4. Energy Efficiency & Cool Roofing

Claim: Selected Interlock® colours are rated cool-roof products and can reduce summer heat gain compared with a dark conventional roof.

Basis: Solar reflectance and thermal emittance for rated colours are measured under the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) product rating program and published in the public CRRC Rated Products Directory. We describe a colour as a "cool roof" only if it holds a current CRRC rating, and we cite the rated values when we do.

Qualification: Actual energy savings depend on climate, attic insulation and ventilation, roof orientation, building design, and the colour you choose. We do not promise a specific dollar or percentage saving for your home, and we do not claim that a metal roof is "energy efficient" in general terms.

No ENERGY STAR claim: the U.S. EPA ended the ENERGY STAR program for roof products on June 1, 2022. No roofing product is ENERGY STAR certified, and we do not use the ENERGY STAR name or mark for any roof.

5. Longevity as Sustainability

Claim: A roof that is not replaced generates less waste than one that is.

Basis: The Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the original purchaser for as long as they own their home, and the aluminum panels do not rust. A roof engineered and warranted to that standard displaces the repeated tear-off and disposal cycle of shorter-lived roofing. This is a durability comparison, not a claim that any roofing product is impact-free to manufacture, ship, or install, and it does not mean a roof needs no maintenance.

6. Certifications & Testing

Independent evaluations and listings issued to the manufacturer that stand behind product claims. Copies are available from the manufacturer or from us on request:

• ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-1790 — code-compliance evaluation (aluminum alloys, thicknesses, wind-uplift tables, fire-classification conditions)
• UL 2218 Class 4 impact-resistance listing (Intertek) for the Diamond, Shingle & Slate, Shake, and Tile profiles
• Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) product ratings for rated colours — solar reflectance and thermal emittance
• Alunar® coating performance, warranted against chalking beyond ASTM D4214 rating 8 and colour change beyond 5 Hunter ΔE units per ASTM D2244, as stated in the Guardian Warranty

A listing or rating covers the product characteristic it names and nothing else; it is not an environmental endorsement of the product as a whole (16 CFR § 260.6).

7. What We Do Not Claim

We avoid environmental words we cannot measure. We do not describe our products, our installation, or our business as "sustainable," "eco-friendly," "green," "carbon neutral," or "climate positive" without a specific, substantiated attribute stated beside the word (16 CFR § 260.4). We do not claim our manufacturing is impact-free. We make no ENERGY STAR claim for roofing. We do not claim that the Interlock® system is made in the United States; it is manufactured in Canada by Interlock Roofing Ltd. (16 CFR Part 323). If you find an environmental statement in our marketing that does not trace back to this page, tell us and we will substantiate it or remove it.

8. Standards & Methodologies

Where a claim rests on measurement, the measurement follows a recognized standard: CRRC product rating program procedures for solar reflectance and thermal emittance; ASTM D4214 (chalking) and ASTM D2244 (colour change) for coating performance; UL 2218 for impact resistance; and the evaluation criteria applied in ICC-ES reports. Claims about recyclability and recycled content rest on the documented properties of aluminum and on the manufacturer's supplier mill documentation. Where a claim rests on a comparison, we state what is being compared.
